The Northern Ireland Executive intends to close the Accident & Emergency Unit at Belfast City Hospital, with NO VIABLE ALTERNATIVE in place. And it could happen as early as the end of September.
The figures speak for themselves:
A&E Vists for the year ending 31/3/11
- Belfast City: 42,356
- Mater Infirmorum: 39677
- RBHSC: 28473
- Royal Victoria: 71956
- Lagan Valley: 30226

How are already stretched A&E services at the Royal Victoria and Mater hospitals going to cope with another 42,000 patients from the City Hospital, plus several thousand from the Lagan Valley hospital where the A&E service is already closed at night?
The number of new and unplanned review attendances waiting over 12 hours at emergency care departments in 2010/11 (7,379) was more than 7 times higher than the number in 2007/08 (982), and almost double the number in 2009/10 (3,881)

Don't let our own NI politicians go on destroying the health service, especially as there are so many areas in which they failed either to save money or gain additional funds:
- Getting a decent settlement from the British Treasury
- Reducing the number of local councils
- Reducing the number of MLAs
- Reducing the number of NI government departments
- Reforming a divisive, duplicated, costly education system
- Turning down money for a decent sports stadium.
The imminent closure of Belfast City Hospital A&E is the next step along an unacceptable route.
Don't let them close it.
